The concept of Purpose can be quite a difficult conversation to grasp. People often ask themselves many questions which tend to sound like:

  • How do I know what my purpose is?
  • Do I only have one purpose in life?
  • I want to do different things and I have different goals which do not align, does that mean I do not know what my purpose is?
  • I don’t know what passion is in life, does that mean I have no purpose at all?

These questions ring over and over again inside some of us, and we sometimes find that we have no answer to them.

The first step to attempting to answer any similar question silently brewing within you and truly uncover what your purpose is, is by first understanding what exactly purpose is.

So what is Purpose Anyway?

Very simply, your purpose is your why. It is the foundation which shapes your actions.

Purpose is built from within: your passions, morals, values, ethics, drive.

Purpose is not as abstract as it may seem or may appear to be.

If I sing, and I say my purpose in my life is to sing, it can be understood that my passion lies in singing and rendering beautiful melodies to my listeners around the world; melodies that evoke a peculiar emotion tailored to each sung piece.

My purpose for singing lies in why I want to sing.. the rendering of beautiful melodies which have a specific impact hoped for. Purpose brings meaning and context to your passions, morals, values, ethics and our drive.

We, as human beings, are complex species. We have different passions, different goals, different set achievements. In all these, our purpose is the deeper meaning of why we want to execute these goals and set achievements.

When you know your why, it answers the questions we tend to ask ourselves and this is where the feeling of fulfilment is actualised.

Always remember

  • Your purpose is unique to you, you cannot uncover it by looking for it in someone else’s timeline. Search within.
  • Comparison does not make the journey easier, nor sweeter. The quicker you stop comparing yourself to other people, the clearer you will find your own purpose.
  • You can have more than one purpose in life

Purpose can be interpreted as the conviction for you to do what you do. So, if you find that you desire to do multiple things in different facets of life, you have several purposes.

Why is it important to know your purpose?

The importance of knowing and understanding your purpose helps you become a more grounded individual and certainly a better leader. A purpose-driven individual is more likely than an individual who is unaware of his purpose, to have a purpose-driven business and live a purpose-driven life.

Practical steps to uncover your Purpose:

  • Examine yourself: ask yourself what you love to do. What brings you most joy?
  • Identify your strengths
  • Explore new experiences.
  • Reach into your morals, ethics and values because they will guide you as you delve into action.

Why don’t you journey to uncover your purpose today and unlock your freedom?
